Laugh So Hard Your Guts Hurt
September 2009
Boring day? These hilarious memories will put a smile on your face and take you back to your days as an undergrad. Relive your wild days and share your memories with us at here.
What is the memory that makes you laugh hardest today?
OK here is a story for you: The year was 1956, the social chairman wanted to have a hay ride but did not want to deal with the transportation hassle to and from, and the expense involved for all those participants. So it was decided the basement would be somewhat decorated like a barn, and we would bring all the mattresses down from the dorm and line the floor with them. The “Stationary Hayride” was born. It was a big hit. Bob Cook – ‘58
“The annual active and pledge football game was always interesting. It was played on what was the Redskin practice field, which was next to the Stadium.” - William S. Arnsparger, ’50

“The jokes and the stories told in the dining room and in the tube room by the brothers.” - William D. Morrisey, ’76
“Christian Trost with a dip the size of a small child. Standing in his nasty terrycloth robe and beat up straw cowboy hat and boots at 3 in the morning. A drunken tradition. No one slept until we sang Garth Brooks 'I got friends in low places' with him. One of the best guys ever.” - Gavin H. Inglis, ’92
“Brother Anton "The Caveman" Golden nearly causing a street brawl after repeatedly stealing the "house supply" of hair gel from the Kappa Sigma house. Brother Joe Serina dressing as an aborigine by painting himself from head to toe in brown paint, throwing on an afro wig and a leopard print wrap for the annual Safari party.” - Andrew M. Black, ’03
"Funniest occurrence was when one of the brothers was dating a girl from his hometown who attended Wittenberg College and then transferred to Miami. He told the brothers they were going to Wittenberg to visit her old school. Back in the 1960's we could not have cars so they went by bus. As luck would have it a couple of the brothers and their dates went to Cincy for Saturday night and when they went to the hotel who do they see but Lee and his girlfriend who were having a secret shack up. Sunday morning the brothers got back to Oxford with their dates and told us at the house on seeing Mr. & "Mrs." Lee O. in Cincy doing the secret shack up. The old chapter house was right on High Street which the bus went right by. We made a huge sign saying "Welcome Back from Wittenberg" and sent a pledge down the road to watch for the bus. When the bus passed the house all the brothers were out front waving and yelling to Brother Lee O. and his "wife". For the next few years anyone going off campus for a shack up was known to be having a "Wittenberg" weekend." - Murray Stewart, '66
"As a pledge, partying all night at the house after the big TOGA party and in the morning taking a shower in the 3rd floor gang shower with my date (soon to be girlfriend), while Karl Tauer, a sophomore Brother, stood guard outside the door. Now that’s Brotherhood Loyalty." - Tim Slattery, ’78
"I love telling and re-telling with Brothers Gary Davidson, Bruce Fisher, and Dean French, the story of the summer workshop and Rock Island, Illinois." -Carson Evans, '73

"The best party was the first Tom Jones Party which had an old English rowdy theme. Unfortunately a few of the brothers were "over served" alcoholic beverages. The look on the Sweetheart's face when she was accidentally hit in the breast by a flying apple in an impromptu food melee was priceless. Fortunately there was no serious damage to anyone, and the pledges got to clean up the mess the next morning." - Murray Stewart, '66
"That Toga Party was one of the best." - Tim Slattery, ’78

"Dep Ewing and I had a couple of cars illegally on campus. I had a 1960 red TR3 and he had a 1958 or 1959 black MGA. We decided to take off for Indy one weekend where his sister went to school. She fixed us up with a couple of her friends. We had more fun racing along the curving back roads leaving Oxford then we had in Indy." - Murray Stewart, '66
"Best road trip was Walk Out trip to Nashville, Tennessee, where 2 buddies and I pulled a dine–and-dash while the Chinese manager chased after us screaming obscenities in his native tongue. We were laughing so hard we could hardly keep ahead of the guy." - Tim Slattery, ’78

T.J. is the 6th Slattery to become a Sigma Chi at Miami. Four of my brothers and I were there during the 70’s and early 80’s. It was something like 15 years straight of Slattery boys at the house.
